The Therapeutic Process - An Inward Journey....
“You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life but by realising who you are at the deepest level” – Eckhardt Tolle
"Many of our present day afflictions are tied to old emotional wounds (past hurts). This process of 'going within' allows us to attend to our wounds and care for our inner needs" Lara
Making the decision to begin therapy can be a daunting process for many of us. We are certain that we want our life to improve but are wary about how that’s going to happen. We might be concerned about what to say in the therapy session, what will be experienced, and will we get it right? These questions and concerns are a very natural experience and it is ok to be feeling anxious about starting a new process. Once you’ve begun the process, it is likely that your fears about this unknown venture will be allayed and you will start to feel more at ease.
At InnerLife Counselling & Psychology, we are mindful of the courage is takes to begin the process of therapy, and we are careful to work at a pace that is comfortable for every client. The experience of therapy is an individual process and clients will be supported to share as much or as little as they are ready and able, and will be assisted to process their experiences in line with their own needs and timing. We use a range of integrated techniques in our work and we are focussed on tailoring the therapy to suit client’s individual requirements.
As part of the therapeutic process, clients are typically invited to examine life problems from a surface perspective as well as explore what lies beneath the problem. This practice of exploration allows clients to begin the process of understanding how their inner life of thoughts, beliefs, feelings and parts of the
self may be fuelling a present difficulty and in many cases, keeping the issue
alive. Working at this level is fundamental to creating positive shifts in our lives.
The therapeutic process also assists clients to bring meaning to their lives, and often, for the first time, clients begin to understand why they have been thinking, feeling and behaving in the way that they do. They begin to answer life questions that perhaps have been plaguing them for years, such as 'Why do I constantly doubt myself?’, ‘Why am I replaying those self defeating thoughts over and over?’, ‘Why do I live in fear of…?’, Why did I react so strongly or lose control so quickly?’, ‘Why am I so low?’……
To be able to make sense of the world of the inner life is an important part of the intervention process and helps clients to purposefully manage and engage with parts of the self in a functional and effective manner. In addition, exploring the influence of early life experiences and how these may shape belief systems and feelings of worth, is another powerful technique for clients.
At InnerLife Counselling & Psychology we use a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques derived from Internal Family Systems, Schema Focussed therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Healing Inner Conflict and Sandplay therapy. Whilst each type of intervention has its own method and style, these therapies are designed to help us look at the relationship between our presenting problem, and our inner life of beliefs, thoughts, emotions and parts of the self. These modes of therapy also offer specific tools for working with particular aspects of the self as well as managing the associated negative symptoms.
The process of exploring the inner life allows clients to work with the source of the problem and respond in a way that brings about long-term change.
