The Therapeutic Process - An Inward Journey....

“You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life but by realising who you are at the deepest level” – Eckhardt Tolle

Therapeutic Counselling and Psychological Therapy – InnerLife Counselling & Psychology

"Many of our present-day afflictions are tied to old emotional wounds. This process of ‘going within’ allows us to tend to these wounds and care for our inner needs." — Lara Petrulis

Making the decision to begin therapy can feel daunting for many people.
Even when we know that we want our lives to improve, we may still feel uncertain about how that change will happen. It is common to wonder what to say in a therapy session, what the experience will be like, and whether we will do it “the right way”.
These questions and concerns are a very natural part of beginning therapy, and it is completely understandable to feel some anxiety about starting something new. Once the process begins, however, many people find that their initial worries gradually settle and they begin to feel more comfortable and at ease within the therapeutic space.
At InnerLife Counselling & Psychology, we are mindful of the courage it takes to begin therapy. Sessions are approached with care and sensitivity, and the pace of the process is always guided by what feels safe and comfortable for each individual. Therapy is a deeply personal experience, and clients are supported to share as much or as little as they feel ready to at any given time. We work with a range of integrated therapeutic approaches and tailor the process to suit each client’s individual needs and circumstances.

Exploring Your Inner World

Counselling and therapy for psychological and emotional difficulties.
As part of the therapeutic process, clients are often invited to explore their life difficulties both at the surface level and at a deeper level. This process of exploration can help people understand how their inner world — including thoughts, beliefs, emotions, memories, and different parts of the self — may be contributing to a present difficulty and, in some cases, keeping the issue in place. Exploring the influence of earlier life experiences — and how these experiences may shape belief systems, emotional responses, and feelings of self-worth — can also be a powerful part of the therapeutic process.
Working at this deeper level often becomes an important step in creating meaningful and lasting change.

Making Sense of Patterns and Emotions
Through therapy, many clients begin to develop a clearer understanding of their inner experiences. Often, for the first time, people begin to make sense of patterns that may have puzzled them for many years. Questions such as:
  • Why do I constantly doubt myself?
  • Why do I replay self-defeating thoughts over and over?
  • Why do I live with so much fear or anxiety?
  • Why did I react so strongly in that situation?
  • Why do I feel persistently low or overwhelmed?

Developing insight into these patterns can help clients engage with their inner experiences more consciously and respond to themselves in ways that are more supportive and constructive.

Therapeutic Approaches Used at InnerLife Counselling & Psychology

At InnerLife Counselling & Psychology, therapy may draw from a range of approaches including:
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Schema Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Gestalt Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness-based approaches
  • Healing Inner Conflict work
  • Sandplay therapy

Understanding and Addressing the Deeper Sources of Difficulty

Each of these therapeutic approaches offers different perspectives and tools for understanding the relationship between a presenting problem and the inner world of thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and parts of the self.
By exploring and working with this inner life, clients are often able to address the deeper sources of their difficulties and develop new ways of responding that support lasting psychological and emotional change.
